Thursday, February 1:

When I have completed my work with the children, I go to the home of our old friend and see him lying there in peace and simplicity; in him I feel I have lost the soul of our little town.

Friend Feustel has sent me the attached letter from a fellow Freemason of Feustel's in Hanover, reporting that Hans von Bülow is on the road to recovery but does not intend to return to England for some time, so according to this we should be able to go to England!! R. receives letters from Berlin, where nobody has understood his ideas about founding a society of patrons. They want to continue with the old methods, lotteries, etc. At the same time the Minister of Culture, Herr Falk, is asking the theater managers for advice on ways of improving the theater generally!!! R. says it is exactly as if a defrauded landlord were to turn to the swindler in his house for help in restoring order!

In the evening Thucydides and The Knights.
