Tuesday, January 16:

My life in its usual tracks; my lecturing makes me laugh. R. unfortunately very agitated and unwell, feels a tightness in his chest; we flee from both thought and speech.

In the evening we start on Thucydides's History of the Peloponnesian War and close the book at the end in a mood of real enthusiasm: it makes the impression of a noble child speaking the truth, solemn, impartial, naive.
