Sunday, December 10:
Magnificent weather. With the children I visit Santa Trinita and Santa Croce, with the monastery and the splendid chapel; then, under Baron Liphart’s guidance, the Bargello.
R. had a very bad night; he was up until 4 o’clock, when he at last wrote to friend Heckel, saying he would no longer direct the festival.
In the afternoon he feels better, and we drive with Prof. Hillebrand and Mme. Laussot to Bello Sguardo and stop at the studio of the sculptor Hildebrand, whose Adam seems to us very fine. Following that, we visit the Villa Michelozzi; we talk much with R. about the possibility of settling down here. R. feels himself to be a German and concludes: “In Germany I earn my living, well or badly, and I can make every effort to do so in an honorable manner; but here I should have to live as a pensioner, which would make me feel very odd.”
