Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 9, 1876

Overview

The day moved through Santa Maria Novella, San Lorenzo, and the Uffizi, where old Baron Liphart again provided amusement with his sharp comments on the hanging and labeling of the pictures. R. was too unwell for afternoon activity, and the evening turned somber as they discussed Bayreuth and his resolve to ask the King to take over the entire undertaking.

Content

Saturday, December 9:

To Santa Maria Novella, the fine cloisters, the first particularly splendid; following that San Lorenzo, where I saw the chapel, then the Uffizi, where old Baron Liphart joins us with R. and amuses us greatly with his criticisms of the placing and labeling of the pictures.

We undertake nothing in the afternoon, since R. is feeling very unwell. In the evening, a sad conversation about our situation in Bayreuth. R. resolves to ask the King to take over the whole thing - he, R., wishes to have nothing more to do with it.
