Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 16, 1876

Overview

The Sistine Chapel made a towering impression, followed by the Villa Ludovisi in the afternoon. Yet the day was shadowed by silence from Radowitz, reminders of the deficit, and bitter remarks about journalists and their contempt for their art.

The Sistine Chapel!!!

In the afternoon Villa Ludovisi. Spent the evening at home. How happy we might be here if we were not besieged by gloomy thoughts! R. has received no answer of any kind from Herr v. Radowitz, everyone is silent except Feustel, who reminds us of the deficit, as if we had forgotten it!

Speaking of journalists, R. says, “These people feel they are right, that we have and can have no art of our own, that I am a fool.” In this mood he becomes bitter looking at art treasures, and I, too, regard them with the deepest melancholy.
