Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 10, 1876

Overview

Began early by searching for cheaper rooms and quickly moved to the Hotel d'Amerique on Via del Babuino. The day ranged from a discouraging visit to Saint Peter's, to a stirring walk on the Monte Pincio, and ended with an evening call from Countess Voss.

Friday, November 10:

Started our walk very early, first of all to find accommodations, the Costanzi being too expensive. At once found the Hotel d’Amerique, Via del Babuino 79. Made the move; then went on a drive with R. as far as Saint Peter’s, after that the Forum. Dreadful impression of Saint Peter’s, expressive of everything that is not music. Felt in our souls with Dr. Luther. Back home we drank to him, both to him and to Schiller, on their birthday.

Went for a walk in the afternoon on the Monte Pincio, a wonderful impression, whereas in the city there is no folk quality to be seen, either in the faces or in the houses. In the evening with Countess Voss.
