Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 13, 1876

Overview

R. began a mild spa treatment and seemed lifted by his morning walks, while also writing candidly about the festival and its real successes. In the evening they watched Sorrento performers dance the tarantella and sing, ending with a surprising burst of patriotic song taught by their waiter from Berlin.

Content

Friday, October 13:

R. begins a sort of spa cure (eau de Vichy), and the pretty morning walks seem to do him good. He writes to Herr von Schl., telling him something of his situation and saying that the only thing at the festival which was really successful was what the Schleinitzes themselves brought about.

Walk in the afternoon. In the evening the tarantella danced by Sorrento people in the hall of the hotel, also some of their plays. One of the women was extremely graceful in an unstudied, natural sort of way. At the end, Die Wacht am Rhein. Our waiter confessed to us that he had been in Berlin and had brought it back and taught it to the people here!
