Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 31, 1876

Overview

The morning was spent fetching Princess Barjatinsky and Niemann’s little daughter, which sharpened the writer’s sense of the ugly talk and opinions circulating everywhere. What disturbed her most was the falseness beneath all that chatter, leaving her wishing for night and an end to it all. In the evening she went to WalMre and a rehearsal of the entr’actes.

Content

Monday, July 31:

Fetched Princess Barjatinsky from the railroad station, then Niemann’s little daughter. I get a fleeting idea of what floods of ugly talk and opinion are always flowing about here. What most shocks me is the falseness and mendacity behind it, and I feel very much like wishing, with our good Falstaff, that it were bedtime and all past.

In the evening, Walküre, rehearsal of the entr’actes.
