Diary Entry of July 14, 1876
Various annoyances crowded the day, including rudeness from the ducal palace over lodging arrangements for Frau von Schl. In the afternoon they rehearsed Rheingold, with Herr Niemann present in a mock-gracious mood, and they later stayed in the restaurant because R. wanted to invent a solution with Brandt to protect the stage effects from the orchestra’s glare. The practical concerns of staging kept intruding on the artistic work.
Friday, July 14:
Vexations of various sorts; the ducal palace takes advantage of the problem of finding accommodation for Frau von Schl. to show rudeness to us! In the afternoon, rehearsal of Rheingold.
Herr Niemann, graciously present, as I say to him in fun. We remain in the restaurant after all, since R. wishes to invent something with Brandt so that the glare from the orchestra will not spoil the effects in Rheingold.
