Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 30, 1876

Overview

A promise from Councilor DiffHipp offered some delay, though R. was beside himself over the situation. The arrival of the English governess was a relief after the unpleasant German candidates, and the evening performance of Siegfried made a magnificent impression even with Unger still hoarse. The diarist reflects on the enormous distance between the work, its performers, and the audience, while R. ends the day exhausted.

Friday, June 30:

From Councilor DiifHipp, promising postponement up to the Sooth certificate of patronage. R. beside himself.

Arrival of the English governess. Very welcome to me, since the German characters so far are very disagreeable. In the evening, Siegfried; Herr Unger still hoarse, nevertheless a magnificent impression! Unparalleled.

Reflections on the distance of the work and its players from the audience! R. very tired.
