Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 7, 1876

Overview

R. gets through the night reasonably well, but the constant rehearsing weighs heavily on him, and I attend one myself to see the remarkable progress, especially Brandt’s work. Back home, I find a sentimental letter from conductor Wiillner in Munich, who explains his old hostility to Wagner while still trying to hold on to control of the Ring performances.

Wednesday, June 7:

R. had a tolerable night, but the rehearsals and everything connected with them are a great strain on him. I also attend the rehearsal today; amazing things are being achieved, particularly by Brandt. Returning home, I find a sentimental letter from the conductor Wüllner in Munich, explaining to me why he was previously no Wagnerian! He wishes to retain control of Rheingold and Walküre, and Levi has made it a condition of his remaining in Munich that he conduct all 4 works.
