Tuesday, February 29:

Departure at half past one, in good spirits, the weather mild; in Eger we are told there is no connection and we shall have to spend the night there; that makes us actually laugh, for we had inquired of all sides in Bayreuth.

Talked a lot about the Arabs, then about the trio of the Scherzo in the A Major Symphony—that if Beethoven had known our modern trumpets, he would certainly have had his theme repeated by them and not altered his rhythm.
