Tuesday, February 15:

A thaw, not favorable for R.; all the same, he works both morning and afternoon. In the evening the editor of the Weser-Zeitung writes and declares that he is the author of the article in the Frankfurter Zeitung.

Yesterday a man from Italy sent an inquiry: the Italian newspapers are reporting that the performances will not take place, and he says this has confused him and several acquaintances who want to attend them! . . . R. enlightens him. A poor teacher applies for a certificate of patronage, to be paid for from his savings; after having seen the piano scores, he says, he must attend the performances at all costs. In the evening Don Quixote, and we note how Cervantes became more and more of an artist and discovered, as it were, more and more in his material.
