Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 28, 1876

Overview

Dictation continued, though my eyes were troubling me. Letters and newspaper talk brought warnings about the risks of openly attacking the press for R.’s sake, while a reported satire by Bauernfeld and its favorable notice in Leipzig added to the sense of hostility.

Friday, January 28:

Dictation; my eyes are causing me trouble. Fine Indian saying: He who produces fine works throughout his life has overcome sensuality. Letter from the editor of the Weser-Zeitung, Herr Hofmann; he says if anyone were to attack the press openly in R.’s behalf, he would have the whole pack after him. Herr Bauernfeld has published a play in which, so it is said, R. is ridiculed, and the editor of a large newspaper in Leipzig recommends the book as useful, desirable, etc.
