Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 18, 1876

Overview

The King sent a life-size photograph, and Dr. Strecker visited with the score of Siegfried, making a very good impression. Dictation and work with Boni filled the day, and in the evening they began reading Lagarde’s pamphlet On the Present State of the German Reich. It contained useful ideas, especially on Austria and education, though its theology struck them as muddled.

Content

Tuesday, January 18:

The King sends us a life-size photograph of himself; Dr. Strecker, successor of the “Sons” in the firm of B. Schott’s Sons, visits us, bringing the score of Siegfried. He pleases us with his very good manners.

More dictation, and work with Boni.

In the evening we begin the pamphlet On the Present State of the German Reich, which Prof. de Lagarde has sent me; it contains excellent things (Austria’s task, criticism of present-day schools), but much confused theology.
