Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 11, 1876

Overview

The day carried the same subdued rhythm as the one before, with memories of the past rising up in a melancholy but oddly pleasant way, as if the sister’s presence still lingered between them. A letter from nephew Jachmann brought news about the Fiirstner affair, and R. considered a trip to Berlin. In the evening Marke’s mournful howl startled everyone, leaving a strong impression.

In the afternoon a letter from our nephew Jachmann about the Fürstner affair. R. is thinking about going to Berlin.

In the evening Marke alarms us with a howl of lament — Brange was not there. Profound effect of this animal sound. —
