Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 8, 1876

Overview

Hans’s birthday becomes an inward, disciplined day of fasting, prayer, and a vow to accept hardship more serenely. Artistic work on the Gibichung hall curtain provides some consolation, and Wagner’s storytelling from Arab history brings a gentler atmosphere before sleep.

Content

Saturday, January 8:

Hans’s birthday; I turn it into a day of self-communion. Work with the children; fasting; a visit to my grave site; a solemn oath to accept everything that is difficult and bad as just.

Walked to the theater, met Brandt and the Bruckners there, R. also turns up, we drive home; in the evening, selecting the curtain for the Gibichung’s hall. This work on artistic things is the only means of cheering myself up.

R. continues reading the history of the Arabs and relates delightful anecdotes from it. He also speaks of the change when Christianity suddenly entered, how moving the death of St. Ferdinand! How familiar to us! It is the humility behind it which so moves us. Fell asleep thinking tenderly of Hans.
