Sunday, January 2:
Today we have our Bayreuth friends to lunch: the Feustels, the Grosses, the mayor and his wife. R. drinks to them, says that his good experiences of the past year have been due to them alone, and that the fact that he has discovered such friends is for him a guarantee of success. Friend Feustel replies nicely.
We learn that the newspapers which reported Scaria’s demands so incorrectly are now saying that, in view of the management committee’s ignoble negotiating methods, artists, Frau Materna for example, cannot afford to have anything to do with it.
Read the first act of Romeo and Juliet in the evening, in order to rid ourselves of our burden of unpleasantness. Heavenly impression.
