Diary Entry of September 21, 1875

Overview

Business kept piling up, with persistent American demands and a new patron in Jacques Blumenthal, while Scharff’s luncheon talk turned sharply to the miserable state of Austria and its politics. Wagner reacted with his usual weariness toward public affairs, and after that the day closed with a walk to the theater.

In Hungary all German-speaking people are dismissed! In Bohemia three Jews are at the head of the German party. “One always, like Goethe and Schiller,” says R., “falls back on not wanting to know what is going on and not bothering one’s head about the political mess.”

The rebellion of the Bocchesi in 1869, quelled in Austria with payments of 30 florins per person! ... Walked to the theater.
