Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 20, 1875

Overview

After a restful night, Wagner wrote sternly to Jauner to discourage the Vienna Tristan and Isolde plan with the Vogls, and the day was spent sorting out what should be answered to Betz and Niemann. A new medallion was being designed by Scharff, and the evening ended in lighter spirits with Much Ado About Nothing, which gave them great amusement.

Monday, September 20:

A good night for everyone; R. writes to Herr Jauner, very earnestly dissuading him from Tristan und Isolde in Vienna with the Vogls; we discuss what to reply to Betz and what to Niemann; it is very difficult to converse with beings who speak an entirely different language; R. says quite rightly that, since he is expecting extraordinary things from these artists, he should try to come closer to them personally as well; but it is this wish that has led to the misunderstanding.

The medal maker Scharff is here, designing a new medallion of R. In the evening Much Ado About Nothing, great amusement from it.
