Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 4, 1875

Overview

Ill in bed all day, the narrator still manages the household accounts, only to be met with fresh aggravation in a letter from Herr Jauner about Fiirstner’s shameless royalty demands in Vienna. R.’s anger hardens into a resolve to avoid future dealings with Jews, and the exchange sends out a flurry of correspondence and telegrams.

Content

Saturday, September 4:

In bed all day, where I did the household accounts.

In the afternoon a letter from Herr Jauner, reporting the publisher Fürstner’s impudent demand to be paid royalties on the new Tannhäuser scene in Vienna.

R.’s great vexation about this; resolve never again to do business with Jews; correspondence and telegrams in consequence.
