Richard has a terrible night, still agitated by the same frustrations, and news arrives that Niemann has returned his Siegmund script. The memory of Paris hovers over the scene, with its humiliating public shrug and the sense of a man trying to excuse himself.
Friday, July 30:
R. had a very bad night, in indignation and agitation. How things repeat themselves in life: Niemann returns his script for Siegmund! We think of Paris and the shrug of the shoulders with which the wretched man appeared before the curtain, exonerating himself!
