Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 28, 1875

Overview

The same exhausting pattern goes on, but the first scenic rehearsal at the theater gives them a thrilling glimpse of what is coming. Visitors and rehearsals crowd every day, from hostile Herr von Hiilsen to the Petersens, the Norn, Jachmann, Niemann, and others, and she bears the constant interruptions as best she can.

Content

Wednesday, July 28:

Continuation of the same life. On the 24th, visit to the theater, first rehearsal with scenery, a splendid sight and magnificent sound; R. was greatly moved. A curiosity: Herr von Hülsen, the long-standing foe; he spends the evening with us.

Next day the Petersens; between times, always rehearsals. Arrival of a Norn (Frl. Preiss); then our nephew Jachmann, to arrange his wretched affairs with friend Feustel; finally Herr Niemann, a disturbing influence, conceited and demanding, contributing nothing. He joins Richter to visit taverns and scoffs at the rest of the deserving company. I make amends and bear it as best I can. On Wednesday and Sunday, the Bayreuth people. Prof. Doepler with his costume sketches; Herr Fricke, the ballet master from Dessau, gives dancing lessons for the children; sad discovery that Lusch has become somewhat crooked in posture.

On the 28th, splendid rehearsal of the first act of Götterdämmerung; in the evening a telegram from my father saying that he is arriving on the following day.
