Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 7, 1875

Overview

The routine continued, though the arrival of the Vogls from Munich was complicated by Herr Unger and by fresh trouble at the theater construction site. A negligent building supervisor had left everything in disarray, yet the Vogls still sang the opening scene from Tannhäuser with remarkable confidence, and the day ended with more social visiting in Bayreuth.

Content

Wednesday, July 7:

Continuation of this life; the Vogl couple arrive from Munich, Herr Unger causing many difficulties.

Still more, however, the construction work at the theater. It turns out that the building supervisor was not up to his duties, neglected everything, so that Brandt is in utter despair; nothing is ready. The Vogls sing the first scene from Tannhäuser very well, astonishing in their musical assurance.

(Wrote many letters in the morning, among others to the bird-maker man in London.) In the evening some of our Bayreuth friends join our strangers.
