Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 22, 1869

Overview

Cosima breakfasts with Nietzsche, takes the children into a flag-decked Lucerne, and hosts a family banquet with the poor student. Music from Siegfried's third act follows, along with confusion that keeps Nietzsche overnight. A searching letter to Countess Krockow about the whole situation costs Cosima her night's rest, while Nietzsche calls the Munich experiences horrifying and Richard writes the King a beautiful poem.

Sunday, August 22:

In the morning breakfast with the professor, then with the children into the town, which is hung with flags and bunting for a singing festival. At two, family banquet with the poor student. Afterward music, the third act of Siegfried.

Confusion concerning the professor’s departure. He is staying until tomorrow morning. In the evening a very good letter from Countess Krockow. I reply to it during the night, which puts a great strain on me. She wished to know from me in my own words how things stand, and to describe that in detail cost me my night’s rest.

When I told Prof. Nietzsche of our experiences in Munich, he said they were truly horrifying. In the morning R. wrote a beautiful poem for the King.
