Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 21, 1869

Overview

Richard completes his copying while Cosima, worried about Lusch's health, lets her run freely and inks the score. Lunch with the Serovs and the Avenariuses is unpleasant, and an article by Judith Mendes horrifies Cosima and deeply hurts Richard. Nietzsche's evening visit restores some pleasantness, while news arrives of the King's travel and exhibition visit.

Content

Saturday, August 21:

R. has completed his copying; I, concerned about Lusch’s health, allow her to run around while I ink in my page of the score. At lunch the Serovs and Herr and Frau Avenarius, neither of the last two very pleasant; he in particular is terribly crude.

Serov shows me an article by Mme Mendès which horrifies me. I do not think we shall be able to have much more to do with these people. R. is extremely hurt.

In the evening a visit from Professor Nietzsche, very pleasant as always. The King is traveling to Landshut and has been to the exhibition.
