Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 5, 1875

Overview

R. spoke to me about the miracle-like image in Gorres, and we turned that idea into a larger thought about the Seventh Symphony as a vision of Dionysian ecstasy reflected in the mind. Rain fell heavily, but Frl. Weckerlin came by, perhaps still in line for Sieglinde, and although Herr Unger preferred the tavern to our company, R. had been pleased with his singing that morning.

Saturday, June 5:

R. told me about the mirage in Görres. If true, the reproduction of an event in the atmosphere is a very remarkable phenomenon! R. says the Seventh Symphony in A major is just such a mirage in the human mind of the Dionysian revels.

A lot of rain. In the evening and at lunch Frl. Weckerlin, will she be Sieglinde? ... Herr Unger prefers staying in the tavern to coming to us; however, R. was satisfied this morning with his voice.
