Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 24, 1875

Overview

The day opened peacefully with breakfast in the summerhouse and a walk in the palace gardens, but the theater situation remained dispiriting, especially the lack of progress on the stage and the still-unsolved need to find a Siegfried. In the evening, the mood lifted as the diarist enjoyed reading several tales very much.

Monday, May 24:

Breakfast in the summerhouse; before that, a walk in the palace gardens. R. drinks his medicinal waters.

Still no idea where to find a Siegfried. In the afternoon we drove out to the theater, and as usual there were only gloomy experiences: the workers are doing nothing, the orchestra pit is still too small, the ground clearance has scarcely begun, and in two months’ time rehearsals are supposed to begin!

In the evening we read some tales with great enjoyment: The Jackal and the Drum, The Two Murderers, The Young and the Sweeper.
