Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 20, 1875

Overview

Birthday preparations continued alongside R.’s orchestral instructions, with visits from Gfrorer and Moltke adding intellectual discussion to the day. R. was especially amused by the Sedan conversation about magnanimity versus action, and the evening closed in calm moonlit stillness in the rotunda.

Content

Thursday, May 20:

Still much to do for R.’s birthday, he busy with instructions for the orchestra; in between times Gfrorer and Moltke. The discussion before Sedan, whether to show magnanimity or not, pleases R. very much; he envies men of action! Evening in the rotunda, watching the moon rise, no lamps lit, stillness, peace.
