Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 4, 1875

Overview

News from the concert is disappointing, since the takings are expected to be meager. During the day Baron Hofmann and opera director Jauner visit, along with Richter, whom R. had recommended, though he leaves a poor impression; later the evening’s popular production of Around the World in 80 Days strikes her as empty and uninspired.

Tuesday, May 4:

Not good news of the concert at all; the proceeds will be small.

At lunch we are visited by Baron Hofmann and the opera director Jauner; the former has really changed the operatic arrangements in accordance with R.’s views. Richter, now a conductor there on R.’s recommendation, also presents himself, but does not make a pleasant impression.

In the evening, Around the World in 80 Days, the present great success, utterly devoid of wit, a lack of any sort of imagination.
