A long sleep, after which we immediately got dressed for the second concert, at 12 o’clock. Atmosphere very nice and cordial, a better performance, audience friendly, Materna and Niemann in tears, R. very cheerful afterward.
Dinner at Poppenberger’s, with the Niemanns, Materna, the Eckerts. In the evening at Helmholtzes’; made the acquaintance of Mommsen, who looks, as R. says, “as if he had put on a professor’s mask for a fancy-dress ball.” Worked out a plan with Herr v. Radowitz to force the state to intervene in Bayreuth affairs!
