Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 24, 1875

Overview

R. was in good spirits after sleeping well, while I made a round of visits before the concert. The performance drew fervent applause from Berlin audiences even though it tired him badly, and the evening brought lively company, praise of his changed expression, and Bucher’s surprisingly emotional reaction to the music.

Content

Saturday, April 24:

R. slept well, in good spirits; I paid some calls with my friendliest friend (to Helmholtz, Luise Oriola, Princess Biron). At half past seven the concert; I in Mimi’s box with Baroness Loe, Frau V. Billow (wife of the Undersecretary of State), Prince Liechtenstein, etc. Great enthusiasm by Berlin thermometers, though the performance was not good and R. greatly exhausted and in consequence out of humor.

In the evening, visit from the Jachmanns and Frau Wesendonck with the Bissings. The former tells me that R. has an expression he never before had - contented. Count Redern visits me in the box, declares that R. has not changed since the year ’47. Bucher affected by music for the first time; in the concert hall he literally cries out, which, coming from this taciturn man, sounds very strange.
