Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 15, 1875

Overview

The museum continued to reward the travelers, this time with Dürer prints that gave particular pleasure, before a festive hotel banquet and a crowded departure for Berlin. Back home, the reunion with Mimi and a good letter from the children brightened things further, while the evening brought a disappointing opera, a superb portrait of R. by Lenbach, and Bismarck's powerful speech in the Lower Chamber.

Content

Thursday, April 15:

To the museum again in the morning; looked at Dürer prints with great delight. Then a sort of banquet in the hotel, with a military band playing, R. in cheerful spirits; departure at 3 o’clock amid a large crowd. At 8:30 arrival in Berlin. Reunion with Mimi.

Friday, April 16:

Letters from the children, good. Received some calls. At 5 o’clock dined in the Schleinitz house along with the Helmholtzes; in the evening listened to Count Hochberg’s Werwolf with Frau v. Schleinitz, no better nor worse than any other music. Saw Lenbach’s portrait of R. in Frau v. Schi.’s house, by far the best that has been done of R.; feelings of sadness not to possess it, though without envy. Splendid speech by Bismarck in the Lower Chamber.
