Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 14, 1875

Overview

A museum morning with R. produced one of those overwhelming encounters with art, as a Giorgione of Adam and Eve left him deeply shaken. That intensity contrasted sharply with the evening performance of Tannhäuser, which was marred by Hermann Schroetter's feeble singing and awkward acting, though the later conversation with the earnest Herr von Rudolphi was pleasant.

Content

Wednesday, April 14:

To the museum with R.; overwhelming impact of a Giorgione, Adam and Eve. It moves and shatters R. completely. Lunch alone with R.

In the evening Tannhäuser, a very dismal impression of the singer [Hermann] Schroetter... Absurd acting (after Niemann!) and a small voice. After the performance with Herr von Rudolphi, an earnest, very pleasant man.
