Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 14, 1875

Overview

The day was clouded by unpleasant domestic news, though Richard was at least in fair health. In the evening he conducted a concert with taut concentration and won an enthusiastic response, while earlier Scharff had brought over the bronze medallion and the design for the reverse. Afterward he grew tired, retired early, and later received a few friends.

Sunday, March 14:

All kinds of unpleasant domestic news. But R. fairly well, thank goodness. Yesterday evening he told our hosts the strange dream he once had in Switzerland, in which he saw himself walking with Herwegh along high mountain paths, and suddenly heard a male choir singing a tribute to him; he told Herwegh that this was a sort of custom in Switzerland, they had also done it to Gessler (“Death comes swiftly to the mortal being”). The medal maker Scharff brings his bronze medallion of R. and the design for the obverse. At 5 o'clock the concert; R. conducts with tense alertness, and the performance is splendid, the enthusiasm just as great as, if not even greater than on the first occasion, but R. somewhat tired. He goes to bed, and later some friends come to see us.
