Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 11, 1875

Overview

We left early, with my father seeing us to the station, and the farewell was heartbreaking. A gypsy band at Neuhausel played a czardas at R.’s request, and its fierce, desolate sound brought my father vividly to mind as the gray sky seemed to echo the mood. By two o’clock we were back with the kind Standhartners in Vienna, and I also replied to Davidsohn about a possible Berlin concert while financial pressures continued to mount.

Thursday, March 11:

Left at 8 o’clock; my father accompanies us to the station. Sad parting! A gypsy band is playing in Neuhausel, R. asks them for a czardas, which they play; it moves me very much with its wild fieriness, its desolate melancholy, it makes me think of my father; the sky is gray. I should dearly have liked to remain another day in Pest with my father; I did not suggest it, but it was hard not to.

At 2 o’clock welcomed by the good Standhartners in Vienna. Davidsohn writes suggesting a concert in Berlin; I reply to him, accepting in R.’s name. We shall need much money; the people in Karlsruhe are stirring up all the Court orchestras, and now they have persuaded the people in Schwerin to demand higher terms.
