Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 8, 1875

Overview

R. finally had a quiet night, while I had to answer troubling letters from home. A walk in the raw weather and a visit to my father left me with a strangely melancholy feeling, though the evening later offered more solace at the Casino and then at Richter’s, where my father played the Schlutnmrlied im Grabe for Marie Muchanoff and stirred deep memories.

Monday, March 8:

At last a good, quiet night for R. Tiresome news from home, which obliges me to write letters. A walk with R. in very raw weather; visited my father, a curiously melancholy impression.

Dinner in the evening at the Casino, two Counts Apponyi, a Herr von Husar, a member of Parliament, and Mihalovich. Afterward music in Richter’s home; my father plays the “Schlummerlied im Grabe” for Marie Muchanoff. Deep emotion in remembrance.
