Monday, March 1:
Dress rehearsal from 9:50 to 12. It goes splendidly. The concert at 7 in the evening. Unprecedented reception, unending applause for R., whole heaps of laurels with fine inscriptions: “To the savior of German art,” “to the master of humor,” “to the creator of Die Meistersinger,” “to the connoisseur and renovator of the ancient saga,” “to the reformer,” “to the sublime master,” “to the dramatic poet,” “to the greatest of masters,” etc.
R. has to address some words to the audience; he thanks the splendid Viennese public, which today, as on previous occasions, has followed him and taken to itself these fragments which are so difficult for the imagination to grasp. Called back again, he brought Materna with him and said he was leaving Vienna a pledge in the person of this outstanding artist. The worthy Glatz, on the other hand, was a complete failure.
