Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 17, 1875

Overview

Eva’s birthday is sweet but overwhelming for the child, who is suddenly the center of everyone’s attention, and R. even plays her a melody. The day is otherwise dominated by money troubles, disputes with Schott and Peters, evidence of theft from the Frankfurt theater, and fresh worries over loans, travel arrangements, and the collapse of plans for Vienna. By nightfall I can only be relieved to see R. asleep, even though even dreams may not spare him.

Wednesday, February 17:

Eva’s birthday. The good and modest child quite overcome by suddenly being the center of all attention. R. plays her melody to her! — Discussion with friend Feustel; very embarrassing financial situation; R. wishes to break with Schott and make an agreement with Peters, who is offering him three times as much for an overture. Proof that Messrs. Voltz and Batz have been stealing (Frankfurt theater). R. is afraid of breaking off with them, since there is nobody else to look after his affairs. Feustel very concerned about our situation. A new loan. R. deeply upset.

In the evening a conversation about the accommodation of guests for the performances. The town is doing nothing. I cannot understand how R. can bear all these worries. On top of that, confusing news about the concert in Vienna. The whole thing was undertaken on the assumption that Richter would participate, and now he cannot get leave, which he, incidentally, already knew when he asked for his wedding vacation! I feel comforted only when I see R. go off to bed, and sleep wipes all these towering worries from his mind. “But one also dreams!” — Eva very worn out.
