Diary Entry of February 7, 1875

Overview

I wake from a restless dream, and the day is marked by the Richters’ departure and the decision to place the Pest concert after Vienna, which leaves me with a strong sense that our paths are diverging. There is also fresh alarm over Materna nearly being lost to Bayreuth, but a kind letter from Schlosser and a small evening gathering with Beethoven help steady the mood.

Content

Sunday, February 7:

I dreamed I had a mouthful of pins.

Departure of the Richters; it has been decided that the concert in Pest will take place after Vienna. What does not belong together soon falls apart, however close the relationship has been; I have the very definite feeling that Richter will now be pursuing other paths; he did not understand R. at all with regard to Herr Glatz.

Richter told us that [Amalie] Materna was very nearly lost entirely for the Bayreuth festival, since she had wished to sign a contract with an impresario which would have made her unavailable for years! When one thinks of all the things which could still destroy our undertaking, one feels quite numb.

Very nice letter from the singer Schlosser.

In the evening a small gathering, Beethoven’s C Major Quartet, Egmont and Coriolan Overtures.
