Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 31, 1875

Overview

The day was bright and cold, with the children at church and later on the ice while I turned to preparations for the journey. In the evening I read "Nathan der Weise" aloud to the children, then guests came, and the day closed with the E-flat Major Quartet and the E Major Sonata. The household felt calm and orderly after the anxious preceding days.

Content

Saturday, January 30:

R. works on his Albumblatt for Frau Schott. Several singers reply to the circular, and in a very friendly way. But R. is still not very well; the rash on his three fingers is a great torment to him.

In the evening read Gfrorer. Herr Glatz still unwell, little hope for Siegfried!

In the evening Gfrorer’s Primitive Christianity, in which a saying of the Jews makes a deep imprint on my mind: “One should pray for a good eye, a humble spirit, and a soul free from desire.”
