Hans's birthday. Lohengrin has had a tremendous success in Boston; I write across the seas to see whether the Elsa there, Frl. Albany, might be won for Sieglinde. Tannhäuser performed in Lucerne, the conductor writes very enthusiastically about it. Paid calls.

In the afternoon with Baroness Aufsess, the widow of the former director of the Germanic Museum. In the evening we read together the chapter in Gfrorer's book on angels and devils. R. searched through his old musical manuscripts, smiling over a rapturous poem he finds among them.
