Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 7, 1875

Overview

The Swedish singers who are performing that evening visit in the morning, and their concert leaves both of them deeply pleased. R. especially responds to the rich lower voice and the later lullaby they sing at home, which fills the hall with a solemn, almost blessing-like atmosphere.

Content

Thursday, January 7:

R. is occupied with business matters; in the morning there is a visit from the Swedish ladies who are singing here this evening. We go to their concert in the evening and are highly pleased with it; R. calls the deep voice the woman of Dalecarlia, the province whose peasants gave support to Gustavus Vasa.

Later in the evening they come to the house and sing a lullaby, Sujiro, which sounds extraordinarily lovely and solemn in the hall, like a blessing on the house.
