R. had all sorts of bad dreams. He is working out the composition of his orchestra. Very great trouble with Batz, who has turned out to be a thorough rogue, but who has a watertight contract.

R. goes for a walk and again encounters a poor peasant woman, to whom he gives generous alms and with whom he has a conversation. Letter from Frau Schott: the Wagner lottery has realized 6,000 marks.

In the evening we read Schopenhauer, What a Man Is, Has, Represents. A long time on the ice with the children in the morning.
