Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 30, 1874

Overview

The household feels lively and divided between work, skating, toys, and the children’s growing individualities, while the speaker remains at her desk. Music again becomes central in the evening, alongside correspondence and playful conversation about marriage, ending the day in the pleasure of shared performance.

In the afternoon Lusch writes to her father. In the evening our four musicians; R. reads them his letter to the conductor Klughardt, which is a model of sympathetic openness. A very nice letter from Richter with a photograph of his fiancée, which gives R. an opportunity to state his theory on marriage: the man should be 40, the woman 20 years old. We go through a Haydn symphony with very great enjoyment.
