Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 10, 1874

Overview

A visit from the elderly Baroness Aufsess prompts R. to admire the moral radiance of a face that is not conventionally beautiful. The rest of the day is quieter, filled with errands and continued reading in Schopenhauer.

Content

Thursday, December 10:

Visit from the old Baroness Aufsess, the widow of Baron Hans v. Aufsess, who was choked to death by a German professor and a German official.

R. remarks on this occasion how unimportant it is whether a face is beautiful or ugly; how much one enjoys looking into the by no means beautiful face of this old lady, because benevolence and kindness are so deeply imprinted on it.

Afternoon errands, in the evening continued reading Schopenhauer’s Parerga.
