Saturday, July 31:
Melancholy night, melancholy mood all morning. Lusch's practice dispels heavy thoughts. R. comes to us and reports that Hans has requested me, through Dr. Hallwachs, to sign a legal document enabling us to get a divorce. I find it good that it should happen in this way. But the thought that Hans has perhaps been brought to this point by acts of brutality disturbs me. The news appears to make R. happy, and so I, too, feel content, though very solemn.
Visit from Professor Nietzsche, a well-formed and pleasant human being. After lunch to Countess B.'s for the piano lesson; a moment of expansion, worried contemplation of life. At home found the Serovs. Heavy rain. Eva still in bed, the doctor not worried. Raging thunderstorm and dismal thoughts.
