Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 23, 1874

Overview

A telegram from the Grand Duke of Weimar brings gratifying recognition of Tristan, and the diarist steps in to answer because Wagner himself declines to thank him. At the same time, he keeps working but worries over whether the orchestration has become too lavish, showing both pride and self-doubt.

Content

Tuesday, June 23:

Telegram from the Grand Duke of Weimar to R., expressing his emotion regarding the performances of Tristan. R. does not wish to thank him, so I do it for him. R. works, though very often asking himself whether he is not orchestrating too opulently!! Again worked a lot with Daniella.
