Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 28, 1874

Overview

After another bad night, the family received the trees from Tribschen, and the gift stirred a moving sense of sacred memory and rootedness. R.'s words about the diarist's mere existence keeping him alive gave the entry a tone of fragile gratitude, despite exhaustion and eye strain.

Saturday, March 28:

Again R. had a bad night! ... The young trees I asked to have sent from Tribschen have arrived - a spruce, to be planted on the grave, a fruit tree, two lindens - I receive them with great emotion; happy the person who has a place that is sacred to him, a nirvana, a land free of delusions!

“That will be the day,” says R. “Everything will be all right, and the simple fact of your existence is my guarantee, it keeps me alive.” For several evenings we have read nothing, R. is worn out and my eyes still refuse to do as they are told! But I give thanks to God that R. has overcome his indisposition.
