Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 10, 1874

Overview

Old German myths briefly opened up a world of artistic possibility, and R. again imagined how richly they could be shaped into drama if he had the time. Most of the afternoon, however, was consumed by committee negotiations and the hard work of turning plans into reality. By the end, a capable intermediary had improved the atmosphere enough to produce agreement.

Tuesday, March 10:

R. receives a letter from Brussels, from a German who encloses some sonnets to the Nordic gods, and this brings us to the subject of the old myths and legends. Regarding the latter R. says: “If we had a true poet, there would be material enough for popular dramas (Rolf Kraki, Nornagest, etc.); however, they should not be conceived in three acts and with all the usual stiff apparatus, but, rather, should be put before us like a picture. I myself would find such a task attractive, if only I had the time.”

At 3 o’clock a women’s coffee party at Frau Dr. Kafferlein’s house! ... R. meanwhile at a conference with the management committee, the subjects to be discussed being the contracts with Hoffmann and Brandt, the preservation of ’75 as the opening date, and, finally, accommodations for the guests. In the end Herr Albert is brought in, and he makes such a good impression that the mood improves and agreement is reached.
